Reject the Family and Care Amendment: A Threat to Family Rights and State Responsibility

The government's agenda to drastically amend the Constitution with the proposed ‘Family Amendment’ aims to undermine the stability of Irish society by diluting and redefining the cherished institution of the family unit in our constitution.

By replacing it with the ambiguous term 'durable relationship,' they seek to erode the foundation of traditional human civilization. This move by them aligns with their broader efforts to redefine the role of women, thus posing a direct threat to the core values that hold our society together and only fortifies the debate to reject the proposed ‘Family Amendment’.

Ambiguities within the amendment further raise concerns about its implications on various legal matters, including social welfare, taxation, and family law.

Rather than empowering citizens, the amendment leaves crucial decisions to judges, undermining democratic principles.

As regards, to the 'Care Amendment' it reveals a government disconnected from its people, shifting responsibility away from the state to support parents, children, and individuals with disabilities.

This amendment not only places undue burden on families but also perpetuates ableist notions by insulating the government from its obligations.

As caretakers and those in need of care continue to be undervalued, it is imperative to reject this ill-conceived amendment and uphold the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.

In conclusion, the proposed  ‘Family Amendment’ and 'Care Amendment' represent a dangerous departure from the fundamental principles of justice, equality, and state responsibility.

By shirking its duty to acknowledge fundamental family structures and to support families/individuals in need, the government not only perpetuates systemic inequalities but also undermines the very fabric of our society.

These proposed amendments threaten to erode the rights of caretakers and vulnerable populations while leaving critical legal matters ambiguous and subject to interpretation.

As stewards of democracy, we cannot stand idly by while our Constitution is amended without due consideration for its profound implications.

Therefore, it is imperative that we unite in rejecting these amendments, safeguarding the rights and dignity of all citizens, and holding our government accountable to its obligations. Only through collective action can we ensure a future where care is valued, families are supported, and justice prevails.
